The house enjoys being surrounded on all sides by a lush, continuous garden, which is easily accessed from the interior through a deep perimeter verandah. This verandah provides an extended outdoor living space that is sufficiently protected from the elements while intimately connected to the garden landscape.
The house is wrapped in a copper mesh on the second storey that allows for all-round privacy as well as natural ventilation. Large operable shutters in the building’s characteristic copper skin open up the interior to picture cut-out views of the surrounding landscape as and when desired. When the shutters are closed, the façade is a light, homogeneous veil; when open, it takes on an animated personality echoing the activities within.
Specially selected shrubs and trees serve as gentle barriers between each house. At the same time, they come together seamlessly as one large garden, enveloping the estate in nature and acting as tranquil focal points for each home to extend and look out to.
Natural cross ventilation and vertical stack ventilation are integrated in the architecture for utmost internal comfort.
The design of the sloped roof allows for effective rainwater run off, preventing future leakages. Sheltered verandahs allow the family to enjoy natural air flow even when it is raining.
Deep verandahs and terraces buffer the interior from direct sunlight while providing comfortable and usable outdoor spaces.
Each house comes with a generously sized swimming pool that is a respite for the warm weather both physically and visually.
Cohiba limestone flooring is used for the common spaces in the interior. Burmese Teak flooring in the bedroom and Balau timber for the external flooring echo the natural tones of the patinated copper shell. Together, these earth-toned finishes fill the house and the spaces with a warm atmosphere, giving a hint of rural, tropical luxury.
Meanwhile, Vis Grey Granite for the bathrooms creates cool cocoons of retreat. This is accompanied by mirrored panels that reflect the greenery outside. Concrete breeze blocks, used as wall screens and skylights, provide a flavour of the old world while functioning as a screen for shade and privacy. Darkened steel for the staircase within the house gives the vertical circulation an anchoring, masculine presence.
